Use Generators Safely
Many people turn to generators when they need temporary power following a severe storm, or when they need electricity at a remote location. But if not installed properly, portable electric generators can be deadly to those who use them, and to electric line crews who might be working to restore your power.
Follow these tips to use your generator safely:
- Always notify the Ameren Illinois Utilities before installing back-up generation.
- Use a qualified electrician to safely install your generator.
- Be sure the generator is properly sized to meet your needs.
- Follow manufacturer instructions and comply with National Electric Code standards.
- Be sure your generator includes a safety disconnect switch to keep the generator from feeding power back into utility lines.
- Make sure your generator is properly grounded.
- Do not directly connect a portable generator with your electrical system.
- Always locate a portable generator outdoors in a dry area far away from doors, windows and vents.
